A GIANT JIGSAW PIECE?!

Tue 29th Nov 2011 by Basa

J. MAYER H. is a Berlin based architectural practice responsible for this weird, intriguing, astounding customs checkpoint building at the Georgia border with Turkey. I challenge you not to get your phone, SLR or compact digi out should you find yourself around this side of the Black Sea at any time in the future!

James Hopkins: A breathtaking artist

Thu 17th Nov 2011 by Basa

British artist James Hopkins slyly transforms everyday objects, imbuing them with the power of self-reflexive commentary, converting them into altogether different items, and nudging them toward an “impossible” state that produces an astonished incredulity in those who behold them. Hopkins’s sophisticated visual illusions are engaging, but his best works also hint at the epistemological uprooting that follows from the discovery that sight, our most relied-upon sense in the gallery, can be untrustworthy. Few contemporary artworks consciously remind us of this fact; Hopkins links it to an examination of his objects’ intrinsic characteristics, and, occasionally, to a meditation on the emotional fallout of this and other fundamental instabilities.

Wow, like this. The dress is composed of small seemingly-floating, wildly colorful round spokes. Emmanuelle Moureaux is a Tokyo-based architect who visits Design Tide each year, with a keen eye for evolving architectural design. See more here:

I'M INDEPENDENT!

Tue 8th Nov 2011 by Basa

Finalised the branding for the 'I'm independent' campaign. Have adapted the main device for the independent section in the Christmas guide due out soon and features a robin red breast with a few choice Christmas key words.

BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATIONS!

Tue 8th Nov 2011 by Basa

Just completed a series of hand drawn figures for fitness trainer and nutritionist Shaw2BFit. They emphasise health, balance and control using a continuous flowing line with vignetted colours and should create optimism, exude softness and give a feeling of well-being, key attributes required by the client. They will be used throughout various media applications, both online and off. Phase two will be to continue to develop a series of drawings that can spell out appropriate words - shown here is the word 'FIT'.

Fantastic news! Been appointed by LE-One to design a 10 page section for the independent retail sector in the forthcoming Christmas Shoppers Guide. Tight deadline of course. The Lakes

Tue 6th Sep 2011 by Basa

Did a 500 mile, round trip, wet Bank Holiday weekend. Up to Leeds for the Carnival then on to the Lakes passing through places such as Ickley. Arrived at Ambleside for a wander round - how many outdoor leisure stores!!? Loads of sales on though - a sign of these lean times and a reminder perhaps for those of us in business to keep at it and try even harder. Then on towards Ullswater stopping at Kirkstone Pass and an arduous trek up one of the mountains. The inn there is in need of some creative input in my humble opinion. Then back down to Liverpool and the docks for chilled out strolls. The Maritime Museum is well worth a visit, especially the slavery exhibition - thought provoking. A good weekend and all refreshed for a busy week!

Morocco’s landscapes

Thu 25th Aug 2011 by Basa

Did a week in Marrakech and regions recently. I can give the souks a miss anytime but the Atlas Mountains and the Zagora Desert are...well, truly epic, magnificent, awe inspiring, jaw droppingly beautiful and majestic. Millions of years in the making, the geology is a film makers dream, for swords and sandals and sci-fi!

Leicester Market: New Makeover

Wed 20th Jul 2011 by Basa

Prevailing economic conditions meant that Leicester City Council had to pull it's original £20m scheme for redeveloping the historic market.

What initally started as a small project became larger as the Market Corner branding was extended to the whole market. I reckon it's brightened up the otherwise dreary ambience no-end! Still, the City struggles on though and we'll do all we can to sustain a level of optimism by improving the physical image where possible. This will positively impact on all of us that come into the City.
